Bid Farewell to One of the Greatest Legends in Music at this Unique Outdoor Concert
Simon and Garfunkel fans, take note: Paul Simon is performing a farewell concert on September 22nd right here in Queens. The concert, which will be the beloved musician’s final stop of the Farewell Tour, will be held at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in the famous New York City borough where Simon spent many of his formative years.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, and raised in Queens, New York, Simon is perhaps best known as one-half of the folk-rock group Simon and Garfunkel. The duo, who went on to sell millions of albums, formed after both young boys appeared in a production of Alice in Wonderland in middle school.
By 1957, under the name Tom & Jerry, the teenagers had their first minor success with "Hey Schoolgirl," a song imitating their idols The Everly Brothers. In 1963, they regrouped and were signed to Columbia Records as Simon and Garfunkel. Their debut album sold poorly. However, in June 1965, a new version of "The Sound of Silence," became a major radio hit in 1965, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. They reunited to release a second studio album, Sounds of Silence, and tour colleges nationwide. The pair continued to release hit albums and struck gold when the now cult-classic movie The Graduate (1967) incorporated their music into the film score, including the number-one single “Mrs. Robinson.”
After Simon and Garfunkel parted ways in 1970, Simon released several acclaimed albums, including 1986's Graceland. As of today, Simon has 13 albums under his belt and 12 Grammy awards alongside various other awards. Simon was also the first person to receive the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song in 2007.
